A primer in

Spiral Dynamics & Integral Theory

Unlocking the Code of Change

Spiral Dynamics is a systems view or framework for describing 8 levels of consciousness individuals hold as they evolve and mature as adults. Learning these basic mindsets allows us to recognize, understand, and even predict certain types of behavior in the workplace, our communities, and the world at large. With this understanding holds the promise of moving beyond our own mental filters, judgments and biases to understand others' personal values, prevalent world views, and therefore the messages specific individuals are likely to resonate with or reject, and the kind of actions they are likely to take.

Spiral Dynamics has been credited as a key element in a growing number of successful business and international government interventions, including the extraordinary transition of South Africa from apartheid. For many, it has the power to change forever the way you see people, culture, science and society. It is invaluable not only for better understanding others, but in effectively communicating and influencing them in a way that they can relate to and respond to effectively.

Integral Theory is an inclusive model developed by Ken Wilber which suggests that there are four aspects in any situation that are both true and relevant. Mapped to quadrants, they are the Exterior (tangible facts), and the Interior (intangible beliefs and feelings) for both Individuals and the Collective Group. Ken Wilber has adopted and promotes Spiral Dynamics to describe the interior aspects of the individual in the Integral Theory model.

The implications of this view to personal and organizational change are clear and stunning: If we ignore quadrants we only address a portion of the situation. Many change efforts fail precisely because they are only one dimensional in nature. Far too many of the most contentious issues we face are argued by "experts" in a single quadrant seeking to describe the whole.

In taking a more complete or integral approach, practitioners honor the truth in all of the quadrants and can work together to develop practical, workable solutions.

Integral Theory and Spiral Dynamics, taken together give us a powerful blue print for making sense of the complexities of our age and a methodology to work together to develop and promote solutions. It enables a common framework in which diverse peoples can discuss and design change that really works. It makes it possible for us to share a much more robust explanation of the past, new understandings of the present and perhaps most importantly, a more compelling vision of the future. Bring your toughest challenges to this session we'll use the integral lens to allow you to see your challenge with different eyes and help you identify the new actions that can be taken to manifest the outcomes you really want.
