Building Business Acumen Overview
It
is said that a problem properly defined is half solved. We begin our
journey of building business acumen by learning powerful tools to
diagnose troublesome business situations using the “Strategy ~ People ~
Process” Model. In the workshop, we introduce powerful tools to affect
each of these areas along with Change Management practices to ensure
the improvements are successfully implemented.
Participants experientially learn and apply these concepts in the
simulation of a small business. In this exercise, participants are
divided into teams (businesses) and are rewarded in the marketplace by
learning and applying their newly acquired business acumen.

Educational Objectives
Organizational Dynamics
Understand the three overarching roles people play in business, why
they are necessary, and how to anticipate and deal with the inherent
conflicts that exist between them.
Financial Acumen
Understand basic but vital concepts in financial acumen, including ROI, Margin and Velocity
Strategy
How to apply the first step in strategy: practical applications of
vision (starting with the end in mind) and setting expectations in the
marketplace.
People
On an individual level, understand behavioral theory in order to
predict future actions based on the antecedents and consequences. On an
organizational level, understanding the dynamics of change and why the
majority of large improvement initiatives fail, and what you can do to
prevent it.
Process
Identify the 9 deadly forms of waste that are critical to steadily and
continuously improving business processes. Additionally, we work with
the 10 Principles of Business Process Reengineering that can be used to
dramatically improve business processes.
